Tasmeem-Design for Life will provide a generation of future Egyptian designers with an introduction to the art and practical experience of design and craftsmanship. It will also allow them to learn about important life and job-related skills centered around three artistic design professions: jewelry design, industrial design and graphic design.
Through Tasmeem, underprivileged youth will have the opportunity to participate in a 16-month program and become immersed in design as well as develop practical and craftsmanship skills in their chosen field of design. Students will also gain English language and critical thinking skills in order to help them successfully progress as professional designers once the program ends.
Although many of the Islamic world's most enduring motifs and designs were created in Egypt, the art of design has slowly faded away over the past decades. Partly due to poor economic conditions, young designers lack the ability or opportunity to put their skills to work. Tasmeem addresses this issue by fostering the artistic talent of Egyptian youth to help unleash the creative potential of an economically marginalized group, and create opportunities for sustainable entrepreneurship.
As such, Tasmeem will give emerging designers the ability to use their heritage and life experiences in creating designs of- and for- their lives.
Tasmeem was developed and is supported by an exciting collaboration between Azza Fahmy Jewellery, AMIDEAST and The Townhouse Gallery.
The partnership builds on AMIDEAST's expertise in empowering underprivileged youth through training in English language, life skills and critical thinking skills, The Townhouse Gallery's longstanding experience and expertise in running art and creative skills workshops, and Azza Fahmy's unique and distinguished design vision.
To start up the project's funding, Azza Fahmy created a 'Tasmeem' line whose complete benefits will be directed towards the program.
